Now added radio broadcast

I’ve now set up a SHOUTcast broadcast channel that can be accessed through the Radio page

Not sure how often I’ll be doing live streams but considering how infrequent the episodes are, probably not that often!

I think they’ll be when I’ve got a couple of hours and fancy playing a few records. I’ll record the stream and upload it to Soundcloud as an ‘episode’. Might be a more efficient way of getting episodes recorded.

Most streams will probably look like this….

Building up the mobile disco unit!

Although I liked the cheap deck I was using, it wasn’t the best but it got me through some bad times.

I did used to have a pair of Technics SL1210 mk2’s but where I lived in 2000 was burgled and one of them was stolen. The other I lent to a fellow DJ and we didn’t manage to arrange to sort getting it back. My orbit drifted away form that scene and I’ve since found out he passed away a few years back.

The other week I won an auction on eBay for an SL1210mk2 from a really nice guy called Sam. It seemed that the guy who won the other deck wasn’t responding to emails until he finally did and said he couldn’t afford the postage so was bailing on buying it (it was listed as collection only!)

So Sam offered the second deck to me and I picked up a small Ecler mixer the other day so I now have a decent set up to do vinyl mixes in conjunction with playing digital files.

Once I have set up the decks (need to get a nice piece of MDF board to sit them on) then there is no reason not to have regular shows. Definitely a lot more regular than 3 in a year!

The mixer also has an XLR socket for the microphone so I may record some chat just as a segway between sections/clusters of records. It definitely wont be about me chatting a load of shit and may not even happen at all, or again after the first time!

The image above is of the record collection currently. There’s lots of new pieces and I’ve been going through more older stuff.

I’ve started to group stuff to try and categorise them. So far there’s big Brian Eno, Deep Chord/Dub Techno, Afrobeat/African music and Detroit techno sections starting to emerge. I’m also making sure that any record I touch is listed in my Discogs collection.

Episode 2: And The Beat Goes On….

This episode has a little bit of a theme (well, in my mind it does!) and is more laid back than I anticipated.

I now have my system set up so episodes should be at more regular intervals now. The first one was recorded in Ableton after digitizing a few records then triggering the clips using an APC40. A massive PITA compared to using Traktor & vinyl but still the levels are still a little out: some tracks are a bit quiet and some loud but are a lot more dense. I’m sure this will work itself out as episodes progress.

This episode was recorded using Traktor 2, Numark Mixtrack 3 controller and then additionally feeding a turntable through the soundcard.

Crate Digging and Set Building

There has been a long gap between episodes due to a few reasons: I have transistioned to a digital set up using a Numark Mixtrack 3 ‘virtual DJ console’ and I have been going through thousands of tracks to create some sets.

Like an idiot though, some of the setslists I have created it, I wrote in one notebook and now I cant find that specific notebook! (use only one at a time, you idiot!). So I need to organise all my books and find those lists and commit to tape!

Some of the sets are more based around the first hour being some laid back electronics and meandering ambience while the 2nd hour picks it up into more beat orientated grooves and lots of Afrobeat/Modern Highlife, etc

I have tinkered with the idea of just making 1 hour episodes then the chances are people wont get too bored but the variety will be minimal (or not, if I make the effort not to let that happen) but the 2 hour episode could be more of a journey. I think I might just do both and see what happens with it.
